You Know You’re Right (Nirvana) - A Song Review By Tiyasha B.

“You know you’re right” is reportedly the last song recorded by Nirvana in the

studio, written and sung in an agonising melodic tone by The Lead Vocalist and

guitar player of Nirvana - Kurt Cobain, with Krist Novoselic on the bass and Dave

Grohl on the drums. This song has to be one of the most eerie, saddening yet rage-

filled songs written by Cobain about his own situation.

The lyrics of this song talk mostly about the feeling of never being able to amount

to anything and feeling like a burden or a bother to people especially loved ones

with lyrics like “I have never failed to fail” and “I will never bother you, I will never

promise to” as well as “I will move away from here, you won’t be afraid of fear”.

The pain and agony expressed in this song through the lyrics as well as his hoarse

yet beautifully unique voice is indescribable yet so relatable. Still there are some

lines written by him in which he continues to invalidate and ignore how he feels

maybe sarcastically or purposefully, the examples of those lines are “Things have

never been so swell” and “No thought was put into this” and of course the iconic

chorus where Cobain repeats screams and sings with all his power, the words

“Pain” and “You know you’re right”.

This song is truly a piece of art which has stood the test of time and proved that

Cobain had the power to make his lyrics so simple yet so effective that people till

this date like me, like you; still listen to him and feel his pain.

This review is not about celebrating his pain or his death, it’s about celebrating his

life and his art and talent.
